Steve Wright was Head of Music and principal composer at Phil Redmond’s Mersey Television and Lime Pictures before leaving in 2007 to concentrate on his in demand career as a film composer. His first commission was from LA Productions to score the Jimmy McGovern created 5-part drama series Moving On for the BBC. Directed by Gary Williams, Illy, Richard Standeven and produced by Colin McKeown and McGovern, this will be repeated this year followed immediately by the new 10-part series, again featuring Steve’s music.

Over the 22 years he worked with Phil Redmond, Steve wrote and produced all the music and songs for Brookside, Grange Hill and his theme and title music are still featured on Hollyoaks, which has been running for 15 years. His film credits for the companies included The Lost Weekend, Double Take and Unfinished Business as well as all the tv productions including Waterfront Beat (BBC); Science Fiction (ITV); and The Courtroom, What Now, Damon & Debbie, Close Guide, And The Beat Goes On – all for CH4. Other credits include The New Shoes, an award winning short at the Edinburgh Festival and a major orchestral piece for the opening ceremony of the 2009 Chinese/American Film Festival in Hollywood.

When Phil Redmond and West End producer Bill Kenwright decided to turn Grange Hill into a stage musical they turned to Steve for all the songs and score and the show opened at the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch. He later provided the music for Terriers, an anti-gun play which toured schools throughout Liverpool, reaching an audience of 20,000 and has become part of the English schools curriculum.

Much of the music for the Mersey Productions and Lime Pictures shows were released on cds and produced by Steve, including The Grange Hill Album and You Know The Teacher both on BBC Records. The Brookside theme was recorded many times on lots of different compilations. He also wrote and produced the single Talk To Me, the theme song for Damon & Debbie, a spin off from Brookside.

Born and brought up in Liverpool, Steve got his first guitar at seven and at 16 was in The Chris Carma Road Show supporting Motown artists Charlie & Inez Fox, The Crystals and others. He moved on to Pepperbox and toured Scandinavia and Germany with them playing lead guitar. He started session work at 21 and was also in the resident band at The Cavern Club supporting all the major acts that played there. He formed his own band, Faster Faster, and played all the major clubs including London’s Marquee, Dingwalls and Nashville Rooms. Coming back to Liverpool to work as the composer on Brookside, he joined the big band at the city’s leading venue The Grafton. His current band is The Blues Gang and after a storming performance at the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain in 2007, when time permits they headline on the blues circuit.

Known to all and sundry as Bob & Barn, Andrew and Paul set up their business and recording studio in Cambridge in 2001 after meeting at Millennium Interactive, where they were both writing and producing music for the company’s video games. Although still involved with the games industry they have now gone on to work in features and television as well. With a successful background in bands they are also established re-mix engineers and have worked on many records for Sony Records including tracks for Chris Brown and Omarion.

They’ve developed a hard won reputation for delivering top quality creative scores for most of the leading games brands including Electronic Arts, Sony Computer Entertainment, Microsoft, Sega, Atari and Bethesda Softworks. They were nominated for a BAFTA Best Original Score for Sony’s Primal and a Game Audio Network Guild nomination for Sony’s Medievil 1, 2 & Resurrection. Other major titles include Kung Fu Chaos, Sega Rally, Neverwinter Nights and Frogger.

They’ve scored several features including Mein Bruder Ist Ein Hund for Bos Bros Films and director Peter Timm; Another “B Movie’ for director Gwilym Morris; Palos for director Jorge Alonso Lopez which won Best Original Score at Spain’s Zaragoza Film Festival; and Offside, a short directed by Jesus Cobo.

They earlier provided the music for the Fox Kids World Cup and worked on ad campaigns for major multinationals including McDonalds, Audi and CNN.

Both are classically trained, Andrew at Leeds University and Paul at York and Leicester Universities – Andrew is the pianist and oboist while Paul is the guitarist and trumpeter. They’ve acquired high-level audio tech savvy skills that have enabled them to build their own state of the art studio, some of the facilities unique to them.

Between them they cover a very diverse range of musical styles, able to bring unique touches to each and every project. Paul cites Stravinsky, Steve Vai, Danny Elfman and Francis Dunnery as influences while Andrew cites Stevie Wonder, Vangelis, Spyro Gyra and John Williams as his.

Mr Miller & Mr Porter have been working together since 1987. Their first commission was the children’s science programme Panic Station; their second, Art Attack, went on to become one of the longest running shows in children’s television, winning many awards, including a BAFTA. The show ran for 19 series in the UK and Disney commissioned seven further series in eight different languages for international transmission in 105 countries, for which they wrote over 15 hours of music.

Their work has not been confined to children’s television. They have scored dramas and documentaries including Cause Of Death, You Only Live Once, Every Time I Cross The Tamar; prime time game shows and LE including Lucky Numbers, Find A Fortune, The End Of The Week Show, Brat Pack; comedies such as Zig & Zag’s Dirty Deeds, as well as commercials for Kelloggs, Birds Eye and Classic FM.

Music for children’s television has remained their speciality and they have produced theme tunes and incidental music across a wide variety of genres: Escape From Scorpion Island, Twister, Brilliant Creatures, Finders Keepers, Motormouth, What’s Up Doc?, Weekend Morning Crew, The Disney Club, Skull, Ministry of Mayhem, Holly & Stephen’s Saturday Showdown, Basil’s Swap Shop; It’s A Mystery, The Quick Trick Show, You Can Do Magic, You’ll Never Believe It, Fingertips, and Eureka TV. Currently, there are at least 3 shows featuring their music being broadcast every single day on British television.

They have also provided music and sound design for several stage shows, Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Dark, Brighton The Musical, These Girls, Bull, Angelo Abela’s Squash! and designed the sound installation to accompany Mark Power’s award-winning exhibition The Shipping Forecast – a photographic celebration of the great British institution of the same name, which was seen in over twenty galleries throughout Europe.

Peter Miller studied music at Nottingham University under, among others, Michael Nyman. He published a thesis on ‘The Humouristic Music of Erik Satie’, one of his musical icons. He then taught music for seven years before starting the Brighton Bottle Orchestra in 1983 which quickly became a permanent fixture on the ‘alternative comedy’ circuit and the support acts on their final gig were Steve Coogan and Lee Evans. Peter also made several solo tv appearances demonstrating unusual items as musical instruments and was an original member of Stomp, the internationally acclaimed percussion extravaganza.

Ian Porter did a Fine Arts degree at Loughborough College and Brighton before embarking on a fulltime music career as a bass player with, among others, Birds With Ears, Fischer Z, Manfred Mann, Robin ‘M’ Scott, Robert Palmer and Steve Strange and more recently worked with Moloko on their hit singles Sing It Back and Time Is Now and later programmed the tracks on their album Statues. He too performed many times with Stomp and later toured on bass with their spin-off band Yes/No People. He recently reunited with Fischer Z singer John Watts to work on two new albums.

Gill is a new writer and although she’s written several screenplays, THE LAST HAND is her first work to be submitted to film producers. She is also in the process of completing a TV drama and developing additional film screenplays, including an adaptation of a 1920s novel.

She trained as an actress at Arts Ed her theatre work included periods at Plymouth Rep and with a Birmingham fringe theatre company run by Adrian Noble. Her tv credits included ‘Clayhanger’ for the BBC, ‘Flambards’ for YTV and her last TV role was in ‘Made in Britain’, directed by Mike Newell.

At this point she changed careers and discovering an aptitude for computing, she re-trained as a programmer, progressed to systems analysis and then into management. By the age of 30 she had pan-European responsibility for Electronic Data Systems’ management of Unilever’s financials systems in London and Rotterdam. She was later moved to EDS’ head office to run the ‘bid teams’ responsible for securing new business.

After a number of years in the computing industry, when the opportunity to take a sabbatical arose, she and her husband – also a consultant, put their careers on hold and set off on a trip which began in Japan and ended in South Africa, via Fiji, New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia.

On her return, she decided to finally pursue her interest in writing, something that had been impossible during the long hours and itinerant life in the computing industry. She undertook accredited courses -‘Screenwriting 1 & 2 at the City Lit’ and later ‘Writing Television Drama’ at City University ready to embark on her third career.

Screenplays In Development

Gill’s background as an actress is immediately apparent in her ear for dialogue, her aim to provide even the tiniest role with an intriguing character and an exploitation of the entertainment industry; either in being affectionately lampooned or depicted in all its tawdry reality.

She says, ‘I am drawn to write about the tiny tragedies and triumphs which are part of everyday life and faced by real people. I have always lived in London and am fascinated by the variation and disparity of its inhabitant’s circumstances. It is entirely unintentional but most of my work to date focuses on a female lead protagonist’.

Open Tab – TV drama – At long last Micky Benson’s luck has turned; as he sees it – long overdue. After a windfall, his oldest friend has just waived the loan which funded his escape to a new life. With money to spare, he indulges his wife and gives her the life she always dreamed of. What could possibly go wrong?

A Loss of Perspective – film screenplay – A woman whose marriage is empty, writes of a couple whose marriage is threatened by a man whose marriage is over. Playing the roles are a couple who have separated and a man whose wife has just walked out. How much more experience do they all need? In the world of Story only life gets to change the plot and trapped inside your own screenplay, things can get out of hand when you end up with a leading role.

Beyond The Lights – A three-part TV series – It is the eighties and a handful of students battle through auditions to secure a place at a London drama school. On leaving, they experience at first hand the random cruelty and luck that will make up the fabric of their lives. Facing differing degrees of success and failure, they all have to confront their ability to compromise and their willingness to sacrifice their personal life.

John Harle’s first credited film score was Prick Up Your Ears (Zenith), co-written with Stanley Myers, which won the Best Artistic Achievement Award at Cannes in 1988. He has been Nominated for a Royal Television Society Award for Windows of the Soul, an episode from the 2007 The Commander series (La Plante/ITV). Other tv includes Take Me (Coastal/ITV); Summer in the Suburbs (BBC); The Echo (BBC), starring Clive Owen; Deep Secrets (BBC); The Family (BBC); The Golden Collar (BBC); Behind Closed Doors (BBC); and A Breed of Heroes (BBC); and Love Lies Bleeding (BBC), directed by Michael Winterbottom.

He recently produced Lesley Garrett’s new album, I Will Wait For You, for BMG Records.

John is the leading contemporary classical saxophonist of his generation and his performance of Harrison Birtwistle’s saxophone concerto Panic at The Last Night of The Proms in 1996 instantly gave him a world profile and he has since performed this work in New York, San Francisco, Athens, Lucerne, Sydney, Helsinki and Milan. At the 1998 Proms his opera, Angel Magick, received the first of its many performances. He appeared as a soloist again at The Proms in 2000 and 2001 and in 2002 performed his own saxophone concerto, The Little Death Machine.

Born and educated in London, Andrew Raiher, a classically trained film composer who completed his studies at Trinity College of Music, is equally at home with both orchestral and contemporary film music. He works in London and Los Angeles and recently completed scores include Solomon Kane (Davis Films), Waking Madison for director Katherine Brooks and Annapurna Productions; the major motion picture, Redline (Chicago Pictures) for director Andy Cheng and producer Mario Kassar.

Other recent credits Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior for Universal Pictures; Dragon Hunters for Paris based Futurikon; and Starship Troopers 3: Marauders for Sony Pictures.

His other composer credits include Hideous Man (Harry Nash Films), directed by John Malkovich and produced by Bella Freud. He wrote additional music for Kingdom In Twilight (Tandem Communications) and Trinity (Fireworks/World Mark).

Over the past three years he has worked very closely with Hollywood composer Klaus Badelt as his additional writer, arranger and programmer on Solomon Kane (Carl Films), Premonition (MGM), Poseidon (Warner Bros), Rescue Dawn (Gibraltar Entertainment), 16 Blocks (Warner Bros), The Promise (Moonstone Productions), Ultraviolet (Sony Pictures), Constantine (Warner Bros) and recently completed work on Killshot, (The Weinstein Company) for Oscar winning director John Madden. As a composer, Andrew’s style has developed the same clarity and detail found so often in his mentors’ scores.

Andrew was part of the creative score discussions on movies involving directors Wolfgang Peterson, Richard Donner, Werner Herzhog and John Madden and this has given him a real understanding of the film making process at the highest level.

Early in 2009 Andrew was asked to score one of a series of animations based on traditional Chinese folk stories. The score was recorded at Capitol Records featuring a string orchestra, ethnic Chinese instruments and the outstanding solo violin playing of Frank Ge-Fang Yang, a virtuoso who spent ten years touring the world as first violin for the well known Alexander Quartet.

He also worked as a programmer with composer Elia Cmiral on Pulse (The Weinstein Company), guitars and programming for composer Ilan Eshkeri on Layer Cake (Ska Films), programmer/arranger for Michael Kamen on Boo, Zino & The Snurks (Warner Bros) and provided additional guitars on Alfie (Paramount Pictures).

He has worked in the studio with many recording artists including SIA, Nick Laird-Clowes, Horace Andy, Dave Stewart , Richard Darbyshire and Dominic King .

Drawing on a background of writing, live performance and synthesiser programming, he has articulated and developed a style, which combines to great effect, the use of electronic elements with more traditional orchestral instrumentation.
